Week 7

When I went to the museum on Saturday, February, 17, the majority of the staff was very busy because the museum was setting up a new monument for the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard was founded in August 4, 1790. In honor of the Coast Guard, and its founder, Alexander Hamilton, the Miami-Dade Military Museum dedicated a memorial to the men and women of the United States Coast Guard. While the memorial was being set up, I was tasked with adding bricks to the path that is going to be completed around the museum. Once the monument was finished, I had to help a visitor locate one of our staff members who is in charge of artifacts and primary sources. The visitor wanted to donate a military medal ribbon bar to the museum. After this, I needed to transfer photos from the Coast Guard monument display into the museum’s social media Facebook page. Normally, whenever the museum showcases an important event, they share information and pictures of the eve...

Week 6

On February 7, 2024, I was asked by one of my supervisors to work at the museum the following day in the afternoon because the majority of the staff would be out. The following day, I had a visitor that wanted to donate primary sources to the museum. The museum is very selective about the items they receive for display. This is because the museum’s main focus is attached to military history that has a connection with Florida. The person donated different military medals, and old newspapers. In order for the museum to receive a donation, the person making the donation needs to fill out a form, signifying that they acknowledge to donate items to the museum. For legal purposes, and so that people do not want to re-take items they have donated, the museum requires that people making donations sign this specific form. Once I located the correct form for the guests to sign, and received their donations, I took the primary sources to the second floor for the museum staff to revie...

Week 5

As discussed in my previous blog, on Saturday, February 3, I visited the museum’s Open House at Bill Sadowski Park. This Open House was to inform the people of Miami-Dade County about our museum, and to answer questions that they may have regarding the museum. After I attended the beginning of our Open House, my supervisor notified me that the museum’s new printer had arrived. The old printer was not printing colors correctly and it needed to be replaced. Upon arriving at the museum from the park, I first had to disassemble and discard the old printer. To discard the old printer, I had to place it on a dolly because it was extremely heavy. After I put the printer on the dolly, my supervisor and I took the printer to the first floor of the museum. To install the new printer, we had to unbox it and place it in an acceptable location. Afterwards, I had to connect the printer to the computer. This was my first time assembling a business printer. Connecting it to ...

Week 4

My fourth week at the museum started by joining a group tour that was being given to students from a local school. The school has a club titled, the Patriot Club. The club wanted to visit the museum because it is a military based club, and the instructor of the club was in the United States Navy.      O n March 29th, t he museum will be handing out Vietnam commemoration pins for the National Vietnam War Veterans' Day. Currently the museum is also handing out these pins to visitors who were in the Vietnam War, or who had family members in the Vietnam War. Two people from the school tour were given pins for their relatives. It was nice to see the Patriot Club members from the local school because it was the same school I attended for high school.        After the museum tour, I was notified that one of the museum staff members would be leaving the museum this week. The staff member that is leaving manages the museum's social media. S...
