January 11, 2024

Before the start of my official day at the Miami Dade Military Museum, I was invited to attend the museum's grand opening on November 11th, 2023, on Veterans Day. The mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, attended the museum’s grand opening. On December 12, 2023, I attended the museum for a workday and received a tour of the museum. My assignment was to lay sand over the museum's central air conditioning pipes, to protect the pipes from Florida's heat and natural elements. Although the general public’s focus is on the history found inside a museum, it is important to maintain the external elements of a museum. This presents the museum as a safe and presentable place for the public to enjoy. The Miami Dade Military Museum is under the National Historic Register as a historic building. The museum was built between 1942-1947 during WWII and served as the U.S. Navy's headquarters for the Naval Air Station in Richmond, FL. This station was a blimp base that was responsible for locating and fighting Nazi U-boats that attacked the shores of Florida.

My first official day at the Miami Dade Military Museum was January 11, 2024. I was briefed on the general operation and function of one of the museum’s computers. One of my responsibilities at the museum will be to work and operate the computer. Some of the tasks involved with the computer include, but are not limited to, Google business, email, digital design, and social media outlets. The museum publishes information and photographs on social media outlets to reach the public of Miami Dade County. A digital design platform is also useful to make flyers and distribute information.

My supervisor at the museum assigned me to the front desk of the museum to answer any phone calls that the museum might receive. Upon reviewing the “direction manual” for the museum’s phone, I did a test to make sure that the phone was working properly. To my surprise, the museum’s phone was not able to receive phone calls. I notified my supervisor to address this problem. The process of fixing the phone is an issue that was not completed on my first day. However, hopefully the problem with the phone can be fixed.

Additionally, I received notice that the printer for the museum needs to be replaced with a new printer. My task was to help the museum locate and find a new printer by researching types of printers online that would be an acceptable replacement for the museum’s current printer.

The museum will be hosting a 50th anniversary ceremony of the Vietnam War on March 29, 2024. The museum will be celebrating this 50th anniversary by inviting veterans from the Vietnam War to be present for a tour of the museum and to receive a special pin with a written letter from the Commander in Chief. I was responsible for setting up the pins in the museum to have them on display for the Vietnam Veterans. I also needed to attach the presidential letters with the memorial pin letters. I put together 40 ceremonial letters and placed them on display with the pins for the Vietnam Veterans that visit the museum.
