When I arrived at the museum, my supervisor wanted me to set up the primary sources that I had recently donated. For the primary sources, we chose a display case that has extra space for more items. It is very difficult to set up an exhibit alone because the display items are being placed into the case from the back, and one cannot see how the items are arranged from the front. I had to go in front of the display case several times, in order to make sure that nothing was crooked or oddly positioned. I also had to arrange the items in a way that they were placed correctly. Once I figured out the best placement for the items, I needed to set up the pictures. The two pictures that my supervisor wanted to choose was a picture of my grandfather next to a plane with his helmet, and a picture of his plane, the KC-135, refueling an SR-71. The pictures needed to be placed on a hard backing and I maneuvered them to a desirable location.
The museum has six metal picnic tables for people to use
while at the museum. The tables needed to be cleaned because they are exposed
to natural elements. The tables are scattered across the grounds of the museum,
so we had to move them closer to the museum, in order to clean them. The museum’s
hose needed to be unraveled and extended in order to reach the distance of the tables.
After I was done moving picnic benches, I worked on setting up the tent. During
my previous blog, I discussed that I had to move tent poles that will be used
during Fleet Week. The tent needed to be assembled, and luckily, there were
people helping us assemble the parts. The day we were working on the tent was a
very windy day, and we were scared that the tent would blow away. The tent was
attached to two 50-gallon water containers, however we realized that this would
not be strong enough, so we tied a rope from the tent to the museum’s flagpole.
The tent is very large, so in order to place the top of the tent over the metal
frame, we needed to wait for just the right moment, when the wind could assist
us in placing the top over the structure. The tent also needed to be set up,
because the museum is allowing Miami’s Fire Rescue to have an event on the
grounds of our museum, and we do not want the tent to be unassembled.
After this, I needed to help locate and take down three
flags for the Miami Veterans’ Center. The Miami Veterans’ Center will be
hosting a commemoration for the Vietnam War. They will be having many veterans
there for the commemoration, and I will be bringing my grandfather to the
commemoration as well. The Veterans’ Center and the museum have a friendly
partnership, and they needed to borrow two of our United States Space Force
flags, as well as one Coast Guard flag. The commemoration will be hosted by
Doral’s Vice Mayor Oscar Puig-Corve and Miami Dade Commissioner JC Bermudez.
