Week 8

My morning at the museum started by placing trash bags in the trash bins. The previous day, the museum hosted an event that included over 30 military personnel from the Marine Corps, and the museum needed new trash bags. The museum needed to be cleaned and look good for the next group of visitors, so that is one reason why I placed new trash bags into the trash bins. This helped the museum have a more presentable atmosphere.

A few moments later, I had to help assemble a new desk for one of the museum staff members. This staff member is in charge of the majority of the museum’s construction and maintenance. He built himself a desk and we needed to put it together.  Although the main structure of the desk was already built, we needed to fasten the top of the desk with screws, and into the wall. In order to start the project, we needed to carry the desk and equipment to the second story of the museum. After I carried a piece of the desk to the second floor of the museum, as well as other supplies, we began to drill the wood into the wall. In order to place the screws into the wall, we needed to determine where the studs of the building were. After leveling the support beam and drilling the holes, we were finally able to assemble the desk. Once we were done assembling the desk, I had to vacuum the wood shavings off of the museum’s floor.

After vacuuming and cleaning up the area, I had to update the museum’s email contact sheet. The museum has a sign-in sheet for visitors, where they are able to write their name and email information. Whenever the museum has a main event for visitors, the museum sends an email to everyone that has provided us with their email address. Every couple of weeks the information from the sign-in sheets needs to be transferred into the computer. As previously discussed, the museum utilizes a platform entitled, Mail Chimp, in order to professionally email messages to a large number of people. Mail Chimp has a contact information tab where each person’s first and last name can be added, as well as their email address, in order for them to be on our email list. Whenever I check the museum’s email for updates, and I see an important email, I send the email to the museum supervisor so that he can be notified about the email. Without the museum’s email and social media platforms, it is difficult to spread messages about our upcoming events and special updates that occur at the museum. Whenever people want to make an appointment for a group tour, they are able to schedule an appointment by sending the museum an email. The museum recently received an email about hosting a tour for a group of military personnel from Columbia. Tomorrow, the museum will be having Junior Military Cadets help the museum to organize our brick path. Hopefully it will be a successful day for the museum.
